Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Pacific, Southwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 18020 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 1007 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.67 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 9.37 and 12.13 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.23 and 1.55 mg/m3.

Key biodiversity
5 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 1564-12995 individuals of Buller's Albatross (NT) from Snares Islands/Tini Heke are present at the site during the Post-guard (May-Sep) life-history stage. 5-7 individuals of Northern Royal Albatross (EN) from Taiaroa Head/Pukekura are present at the site during the Incubation (Oct-Feb) life-history stage. 860-2151 individuals of Salvin's Albatross (VU) from Snares Islands/Tini Heke are present at the site during the Breeding (Aug-Apr) life-history stage. 270415-661015 individuals of Sooty Shearwater (NT) from Codfish Island/Whenua Hou are present at the site during the Breeding (Nov-May) life-history stage. 59597-68771 individuals of White-capped Albatross (NT) from Disappointment Island are present at the site during the Non-breeding (Year-Round) life-history stage.
