This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within the Australia Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Pacific, Southwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 745 km2 and is 44 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 312 to 5379 m, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 3.8 and 4.28 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.17 and 0.19 mg/m3.
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 360-2470 individuals of Light-mantled Albatross (NT) from Macquarie Island are present at the site during the Incubation (Oct-Jan) life-history stage. 323-3227 individuals of Northern Giant-petrel (LC) from Macquarie Island are present at the site during the Breeding (Oct-Apr) life-history stage.
