Site description (2012 baseline)
This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within the Chile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Pacific, Southeast FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 1898 km2 and is 44 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 130 to 2529 m, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 10.9 and 11.2 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 1.17 and 1.98 mg/m3.
Key biodiversity
3 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 156-851 individuals of Wandering Albatross (VU) from Iles Kerguelen are present at the site during the Immature (Jun-Dec) life-history stage. 1342-3067 individuals of Wandering Albatross (VU) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Sabbatical (Oct-May) life-history stage. 9900-16054 individuals of Black-browed Albatross (EN) from Islas Diego Ramirez are present at the site during the Incubation (Sep-Dec) life-history stage.
