A subalpine, mountainous area in the south-central Alps. It includes the southern part of low Valtellina and the high parts of Val Brembana, Val Seriana and Val di Scalve. Extensive broadleaved and coniferous woodlands, alpine grasslands and rocky areas predominate. The main land-uses are linked to nature conservation and to agriculture and forestry in mountain habitats.
The area is important for five of the 10 species of the Eurasian high-montane biome, and for Aquila chrysaetos.
