Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (to Australia) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Indian Ocean, Eastern FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 11290 km2 and is 921 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 5186 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.13 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 27 and 27.43 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.09 and 1.37 mg/m3.

Seaward extensions around breeding colony; North Keeling Island include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Brown Noddy (LC) 7500-7999 individuals, Lesser Frigatebird (LC) 6000-6000 individuals and Red-footed Booby (LC) 4600-51000 individuals.
