Site description (baseline)
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Namibia Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Atlantic, Southeast FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 5884 km2 and is 22 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 150 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.88 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 13.19 and 14.89 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 1.96 and 8.54 mg/m3.
Key biodiversity
3 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Namib-Naukluft Park, Sandwich Harbour include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of African Penguin (EN) , Kelp Gull (LC) and Damara Tern (NT) 468-648 individuals.
