An area of hills belonging to the Spisko-Gemerský karst. The forest consists mainly of Fagus, Larix, Acer and Pinus. Rocky slopes support dry meadows and scrub, and limestone cliffs, boulders, caves and other karst formations are also present. The IBA is important biogeographically as it lies on the northern boundary of the Pannonian zone.
An important site for species of forest and rocky habitats. Ciconia nigra, Aquila chrysaetos, Falco peregrinus and other raptors, and Emberiza cia also breed. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (5-10 pairs).
