Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using both tracking data and seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It falls within the Australia Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Pacific, Southwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 3794 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 5509 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 3.57 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 3.88 and 4.73 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.17 and 0.64 mg/m3.

Key biodiversity
5 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 37-361 individuals of Black-browed Albatross (EN) from Macquarie Island are present at the site during the Incubation (Sep-Dec) life-history stage. 360-2470 individuals of Light-mantled Albatross (NT) from Macquarie Island are present at the site during the Incubation (Oct-Jan) life-history stage. 323-3227 individuals of Northern Giant-petrel (LC) from Macquarie Island are present at the site during the Breeding (Oct-Apr) life-history stage. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Macquarie Island include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Sooty Shearwater (NT) 5331-5331 individuals and White-headed Petrel (LC) 23550-27000 individuals.
