A large embanked river and shipping canal (Talaue der Oder), flowing south-north through a moraine landscape. The banks are vegetated with reed Phragmites and herbaceous growth; the surrounds are polders subject to flooding during high tides. Human activities include shipping, intensive grassland cultivation and arable production.
The site holds the highest density of breeding Crex crex in Germany, and is one of only two breeding sites for Acrocephalus paludicola. The site regularly holds 20,000 or more waterbirds, and the site is a migratory bottleneck, where 8,500 Grus grus reglarly pass.
