Lough Carra is situated south of Castlebar, in County Mayo. It is a large, clear, calcareous lake with many bays, and islands, and is predominantly spring-fed. There are areas of wet woodland, marsh and reedbed on the lakeshore. The lake is linked hydrologically to Lough Mask (site 051), immediately to its south.
The site was designated as a Special Protection Area on the basis of migratory waterfowl populations, including nationally important numbers of Aythya fuligula (438 birds, 1995).
