This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Tanzania Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Indian Ocean, Western FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 14470 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 1812 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.79 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 26.86 and 27.5 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.14 and 2.9 mg/m3.

Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Latham Island include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Brown Noddy (LC) 15000-26640 individuals, Great Crested Tern (LC) 1125-1500 individuals, Sooty Tern (LC) 30000-84000 individuals and Masked Booby (LC) 330-2805 individuals.
