Site description (2000 baseline)
A freshwater lake, bounded in the north-west by the dyke of Oostelijk Flevoland polder (reclaimed in 1957) and in the south-east by the mainland. There are extensive though narrow reedbeds along the mainland coast. The site lies adjacent to Lake Drontermeer (041) in the north and to Lake Wolderwijd (043) in the south-east (with sluices at both sides). Sand extraction occurs. This site, together with site 043, formed part of a single, larger site (former site NL032) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
Key biodiversity
The site is a roost for geese Anser from surrounding feeding areas, but numbers are poorly covered by counts. The average seasonal peak number of waterbirds during 1992-1996 was more than 20,000.
