Lake Oursi - Lake Darkoye

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2001 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species'):
Species Current IUCN Red List Category Season Year(s) Population estimate at site IBA criteria met
Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis LC non-breeding 1998 500 individuals A4i
African Collared-dove Streptopelia roseogrisea LC resident 1998 present A3
Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio LC non-breeding 1998 647 individuals A4i
Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus LC non-breeding 1998 1,713 individuals A4i
Cricket Warbler Spiloptila clamans LC resident 1998 present A3
Chestnut-bellied Starling Lamprotornis pulcher LC resident 1998 present A3
Black Scrub-robin Cercotrichas podobe LC resident 1998 present A3
Sudan Golden Sparrow Passer luteus LC resident 1998 present A3
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a non-breeding 1998 min 20,000 individuals A4iii

The current IUCN Red List category may differ from that which was valid at the time of IBA criteria assessment (2001).

IBA Conservation

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment (most recent) State (condition) Pressure (threat) Response (action)
2001 unfavourable high low
Was the whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Habitat detail Reference area (ha) Actual area (ha) Habitat quantity (% remaining) Habitat quality (carrying capacity) Result
Grassland 0 0 good (> 90%) poor (40-69%) unfavourable
Wetlands (inland) Freshwater lakes and pools 0 0 good (> 90%) good (> 90%) favourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat level 1 Threat level 2 Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification annual & perennial non-timber crops - small-holder farming happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) slow but significant deterioration high
Agricultural expansion and intensification livestock farming and ranching (includes forest grazing) - small-holder grazing, ranching or farming happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) slow but significant deterioration high
Biological resource use fishing & harvesting aquatic resources - unintentional effects: subsistence/small scale happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) slow but significant deterioration high
Biological resource use gathering terrestrial plants - unintentional effects (species being assessed is not the target) happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) slow but significant deterioration high
Biological resource use hunting & collecting terrestrial animals - intentional use (species being assessed is the target) happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) slow but significant deterioration high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected-area designation Management planning Other conservation action Result
Most of site (50-90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management plan exists but the management planning process has begun Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
