A shallow (<1.5 m) coastal freshwater lake, rich in emergent vegetation, with several natural islands, two of them covered with broadleaved forest, and five artificial islands for nesting waterfowl. Human activities include fishing and hunting.
One of the richest lakes for breeding birds in Latvia and an important passage site for swans and ducks. The area also supports about 2,000 moulting ducks. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Anser erythropus (probable passage visitor), Haliaeetus albicilla (breeding).
