A freshwater lake, bounded in the north by the dyke of Zuidelijk Flevoland polder (reclaimed in 1968) and in the south by the mainland. The site is connected to Lake Markermeer (038) in the west and to Lake Eemmeer (045) in the east. There are extensive though narrow reedbeds along the mainland coast. The site includes a grassland polder east of the city of Naarden.
The average seasonal peak number of waterbirds during 1992-1996 was more than 20,000.
