Site description (baseline)
The area includes two freshwater lakes of volcanic origin (Bracciano and Martignano), located 20 km north-west of Rome, surrounded by extensive tracts of broadleaved woodland (oak Quercus, chestnut Castanea) and of arable land. The main land-uses are forestry, hunting and agriculture.
Key biodiversity
Fulica atra and grebes also winter in some numbers on the lakes. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (max. 1, winter).
