Lake Bibishervan and Lake Eymar

Area: 550 ha


Site description (1994 baseline)
The site comprises two shallow freshwater lakes, Lake Bibishervan (37°09'N 54°52'E, 300 ha) and Lake Eymar (37°08'N 54°52'E, 250 ha), with fringing Phragmites and Carex on the southern edge of the Turkoman Steppes 30 km west-south-west of Gonbad-e Qaboos. The surrounding area is cultivated.

Key biodiversity
See box for key species. A wintering area for a wide variety of waterfowl including good numbers of Netta rufina (up to 740) and Vanellus vanellus. Breeding birds include Glareola pratincola and Chlidonias hybridus, and up to ten Aquila clanga have occurred on passage.
