Site description (baseline)
A mountain area in the central Apennines, between Monti Sibillini (in the north) and Gran Sasso d'Italia (in the south). The main habitats are extensive broadleaved forests (oak Quercus, beech Fagus), alpine grasslands, cultivated land, and a freshwater lake (Lago di Campotosto). The main land-use is nature conservation and tourism.
Key biodiversity
The lake holds nationally important numbers of wintering waterbirds.
