Site description (baseline)
A large bay with many sand- and gravel-banks and estuaries. 193,000 ha (62% of the total transboundary site) is within German territory. Sandbanks and open deeper parts hold communities of shellfish Macoma and stone reefs have high densities of mussels Mytilus.
Key biodiversity
The site is of high importance for wintering birds, including c.10% of the north-west European population of Somateria mollissima. Most birds are in the German zone.
