The area is included partly within the Kandalakshsky Nature Reserve. In 1995 as it was confirmed as a Wetland of International Importance [Ramsar site??].
Habitat and land use
The islands range from rocky outcrops and low-lying treeless islets to large islands. There are some lakes on the larger islands, with coastal meadows and reed and sedge-beds.
