A heterogeneous forest area with glades, wetlands and saltmarshes. Until recently these old-growth forests contained three of the oldest recorded Quercus trees (800-2,000 years old) in Europe, but unfortunately within the last 20 years these have either died or started to die.
Pernis apivorus, Caprimulgus europaeus, Dryocopus martius and Lanius collurio, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, breed at the site.
