The depth ranges from 0 to 2956 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.04 m/s and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 25.77 and 27.03 °C.

Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Islands north of Port Stewart (Great Barrier Reef), Stapleton Island (Great Barrier Reef), Wilson Reef (Great Barrier Reef) include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Bridled Tern (LC) 4500-24000 individuals, Brown Booby (LC) 3000-8160 individuals and Lesser Crested Tern (LC) 2385-19695 individuals.
