The depth ranges from 174 to 4797 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.72 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 14.39 and 17.79 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.21 and 0.4 mg/m3.

BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 5-32 individuals of Amsterdam Albatross (CR) from Ile Amsterdam are present at the site during the Non-breeding (Mar-Oct) and Juvenile (Feb-Apr) life-history stages. 938-1500 individuals of Barau's Petrel (EN) from Reunion are present at the site during the Breeding (Oct-Mar) life-history stage. 251-456 individuals of Wandering Albatross (VU) from Iles Crozet are present at the site during the Juvenile (Nov-May) and Immature (Jan-Sep) life-history stages.
