Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within High Seas International Waters and the Indian Ocean, FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 175566 km2 and is 846 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 815 to 5320 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.18 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 18.52 and 21.67 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.15 and 0.22 mg/m3.
Key biodiversity
6 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 5-32 individuals of Amsterdam Albatross (CR) from Ile Amsterdam are present at the site during the Juvenile (Jan-Aug) and Non-breeding (Apr-Nov) life-history stages. 251-456 individuals of Wandering Albatross (VU) from Iles Crozet are present at the site during the Immature (Feb-Oct) and Juvenile (Dec-Jun) life-history stages. 223-342 individuals of Sooty Albatross (EN) from are present at the site during the Juvenile (Apr-May) life-history stage. 938-1500 individuals of Barau's Petrel (EN) from Reunion are present at the site during the Breeding (Nov-Apr) life-history stage.
