The site covers an area of 3609 km2 and is 31 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 60 to 1647 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.7 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 12.85 and 13.94 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.41 and 1.28 mg/m3.

BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 1325-10598 individuals of Shy Albatross (NT) from Mewstone are present at the site during the Incubation (Sep-Dec) life-history stage. 278-321 individuals of Wandering Albatross (VU) from Iles Crozet are present at the site during the Juvenile (Jan-Jun) life-history stage.
