This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Bahamas Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Atlantic, Western Central FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 490 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 1 to 1434 m, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 26.8 and 27.23 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.21 and 1.93 mg/m3.
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Guana Cays include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Roseate Tern (LC) 33-237 individuals and Sandwich Tern (LC) 488-2847 individuals.
