Wide plains both sides of the River Guadalentín with ravines, saltmarshes and small expanses of unploughed saline ground. There are also orchards, areas of cereal cultivation and almond-groves.
This is an important area for breeding steppe birds, although numbers are declining. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Marmaronetta angustirostris (2-7 passage individuals) and Falco naumanni (1-5 passage individuals).
