This Marine IBA is identified using both tracking data and seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It falls within the Réunion (to France) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Indian Ocean, Western FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 110664 km2 and is 22 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 5614 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.01 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 25.08 and 25.94 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.07 and 0.17 mg/m3.

BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 938-6000 individuals of Barau's Petrel (EN) from Reunion are present at the site during the Breeding (Nov-Apr) life-history stage. Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Grand Bénard - Tapcal, Plaine des Chicots - Plaine d'Affouches, Mouth of the Cirque de Salazie, Rivière des Marsouins - Grand Etang, Grand Bassin - Le Dimitile, Rivière des Remparts - Rivière Langevin, Piton des Neiges - Gros Morne include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Barau's Petrel (EN) 12000-19500 individuals, Mascarene Petrel (CR) and Audubon's Shearwater (LC) 5400-5400 individuals.
