The current area incorporates part of a site that was listed in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989), `Area between Gemona, Valle Resia, Monte Canin and Foresta del Tarvisio' (part of former site IT037).

Key biodiversity
The site is particularly important for Crex crex, which breeds in the grasslands, and for gamebirds.
