Site description (2000 baseline)
A 20-km long section of the River Rhine between Tolkamer (near the German border) and Arnhem (close to site 049) and a 12-km section of the River Waal between the branch of the Rhine and the city of Nijmegen (close to site 050). The site includes the riverbed, flood-plain, clay pits, and the inland subsites Oude Rijnstrangen (1,090 ha) and Ooijpolder (1,575 ha). Elsewhere the site is bounded by the winter dykes. Clay extraction occurs.
Key biodiversity
There are large roosts of Anser albifrons, the birds arriving from German and Dutch feeding areas (max. 100,000), but available counts underestimate the actual numbers.
