Gaujiena bogs and forests


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Several raised bogs, separated and surrounded by vast, mixed, mainly wet forests, near the Estonian border. The area is relatively unaffected by human activities, which include forestry, hunting and cranberry Vaccinium collecting.



Key biodiversity
The site is an important staging area for migrating geese (Anser fabalis, A. albifrons), although no precise counts have been made. There is a diverse assemblage of breeding birds of forest and bog.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The protected areas cover bogs.

National Partial International NoneAbout 1,500 ha of IBA covered by four Restricted Nature Territories (totalling c.1,500 ha).
