A treeless plateau of high montane to subalpine grassland, used mainly for rough pasture. The exposed northern slopes support semi-natural montane mixed forest (Picea, Abies, Acer). Additional habitats include small fens and transitional bogs, springs and tarns.
The site is important for breeding Picoides tridactylus, Anthus pratensis and A. spinoletta.
