The site comprises two adjacent areas that contain remnant fragments of a raised bog (formerly 30,000 ha in extent), and includes pools, peatlands, marshes, swampy Betula forest, heathland and grassland. The area is located between the cities of Helmond and Venlo. This site, together with sites 087 and 088, formed part of a single, larger site (former site NL056) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
