Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the British Indian Ocean Territory Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Indian Ocean, Western FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 42552 km2 and is 1566 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 3924 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.58 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 27.74 and 28.36 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.11 and 0.77 mg/m3.

Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Danger Island, Chagos Bank include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Brown Noddy (LC) 55500-62160 breeding pairs, Lesser Noddy (LC) 49500-79200 breeding pairs, Audubon's Shearwater (LC) 1260-1260 breeding pairs, Sooty Tern (LC) 71241-149249 breeding pairs and Red-footed Booby (LC) 1041-8849 breeding pairs.
