Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using both tracking data and seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It falls within the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Atlantic, Southwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 3849 km2 and is 44 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 210 m, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 6.48 and 7.44 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.37 and 2.11 mg/m3.

Key biodiversity
5 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 19617-74109 individuals of Black-browed Albatross (EN) from Beauchene Island are present at the site during the Post-guard (Jan-Jun) life-history stage. 2400-20855 individuals of Black-browed Albatross (EN) from New Island are present at the site during the Brood-guard (Jan-Feb) life-history stage. Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Bird Island, New Island Group include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Imperial Shag (LC) 3750-3750 breeding pairs, White-chinned Petrel (VU) 75-75 breeding pairs and Sooty Shearwater (NT).
