This Marine IBA is identified using both tracking data and seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It falls within the Australia Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Indian Ocean, Eastern FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 736 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 49 m and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 12.77 and 13.75 °C.
3 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 19286-46286 individuals of Short-tailed Shearwater (LC) from are present at the site during the Breeding (Nov-Apr) life-history stage. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Betsey Island include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Black-faced Cormorant (LC) 696-696 individuals and Short-tailed Shearwater (LC) 390000-510000 individuals.
