The site covers an area of 51597 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 3812 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.95 m/s and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 10.42 and 20.54 °C.
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Matsumaekojima islet include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Rhinoceros Auklet (LC) and Black-tailed Gull (LC) 50000-80000 individuals.
