The site covers an area of 10159 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 271 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.12 m/s and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 6.4 and 9.53 °C.

Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Baie de Gaspé, Île Bonaventure, Shigawake-Newport, Cap d'Espoir, Bonaventure Island, Péninsule de Forillon include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Black Guillemot (LC) 1191-2263 individuals, Northern Gannet (LC) 57500-74750 individuals, Common Murre (LC) 33428-79392 individuals, Razorbill (LC) 4000-7600 individuals and Common Tern (LC) 500-850 individuals.
