Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using both tracking data and seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It falls within the Canada Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Atlantic, Northwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 7823 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 306 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.26 m/s and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 5.11 and 6.58 °C.
Key biodiversity
3 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 72000-213750 individuals of Sooty Shearwater (NT) from Kidney Island are present at the site during the Non-breeding (Jun-Sep) life-history stage. Seaward extensions around breeding colony; Baccalieu Island include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Atlantic Puffin (LC) 101250-128250 individuals and Northern Gannet (LC) 1016-1320 individuals.
