Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the Australia Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Indian Ocean, Eastern FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 4759 km2 and is 22 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 70 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.37 m/s and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 14.8 and 15.31 °C.

Key biodiversity
3 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Boxen Island & Big Black Reef, Forsyth, Passage & Gull Islands, Night Island (Bass Strait), Chalky, Big Green and Badger Island Groups, Franklin Sound Islands, Babel Island Group include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Fairy Tern (VU) 267-267 individuals, Black-faced Cormorant (LC) 2179-2279 individuals and Short-tailed Shearwater (LC) 15676800-16622382 individuals.
