Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Atlantic, Southwest FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 29221 km2 and is 22 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 55 to 2097 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.88 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 5.44 and 7.07 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.29 and 0.98 mg/m3.
Key biodiversity
2 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 72000-134286 individuals of Sooty Shearwater (NT) from Kidney Island are present at the site during the Incubation (Dec-Feb) and Pre-egg (Nov-Jan) life-history stages.
