Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using tracking data. It falls within the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Atlantic, Antarctic FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 21105 km2 and is 62 km away from the closet coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 3843 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 3.01 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 1.02 and 1.6 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.35 and 2.17 mg/m3.

Key biodiversity
11 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. BirdLife analyses of tracking data estimates that 383-3519 individuals of Wandering Albatross (VU) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Sabbatical (Nov-Feb), Brood-guard (Mar-Apr), Incubation (Dec-Mar) and Post-guard (Apr-Dec) life-history stages. 808-4944 individuals of Northern Giant-petrel (LC) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Incubation (Oct-Dec) life-history stage. 1350-10432 individuals of Light-mantled Albatross (NT) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Post-guard (Feb-Jun) life-history stage. 177-820 individuals of White-chinned Petrel (VU) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Post-guard (Jan-May) life-history stage. 922-1875 individuals of Grey-headed Albatross (VU) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Brood-guard (Dec-Jan) life-history stage. 13373-101892 individuals of Black-browed Albatross (EN) from South Georgia are present at the site during the Brood-guard (Dec-Jan), Incubation (Sep-Dec) and Post-guard (Jan-May) life-history stages.
