A mountainous area in the south-western Alps, which includes the valleys of Antigorio and Formazza (the main ones), Devero, Carrasca and Isorno. Broadleaved and coniferous woodlands are extensive, with relatively unspoilt alpine grasslands and rocky areas. The main land-uses are cattle-rearing, forestry and tourism.
Five of the 10 species of the Eurasian high-montane biome breed in important numbers. The area is also important for Aquila chrysaetos and grouse (Tetraonidae).
