Site description
This Marine IBA is identified using seaward extensions around breeding colonies. It originates from the South Africa Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Atlantic, Southeast FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 15967 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 3095 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 2.42 m/s, mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 18.44 and 23.05 °C and mean annual chlorophyll-a concentrations found to range between 0.32 and 4.16 mg/m3.

Key biodiversity
5 species trigger IBA criteria at this Marine IBA. Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Algoa Bay Island Nature Reserve, Alexandria coastal belt, Swartkops estuary, Redhouse and Chatty saltpans include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Cape Gannet (VU) 88500-150450 individuals, African Penguin (EN) 50880-60420 individuals, Roseate Tern (LC) 351-513 individuals, Kelp Gull (LC) 1995-3791 individuals and Damara Tern (NT).
