Alas Purwo is located on Blambangan Peninsula on the eastern most of Java.
Key biodiversity
Non-bird biodiversity: Cuon alpinus, Trachypithecus auratus, Chelonia mydas, Dermochelys coriacea, Eretmochelys imbricata, Lepidochelys olivacea.Teluk Grajagan is used for turtles nesting site (Beudels & Kurnianto 1982, Watling 1990b, Hedges & Tyson 1996) and Bos javanicus (Grantham personal communication.).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Turtle egg collection and hunting. Cutting of Kleinlovia kauki for industry and Acacia arabika introduction (Grantham personal communication., Beudels & Kurnianto 1982, MacKinnon et.al.1982, Watling 1990b).
Protected areas
Declared as National Park (43420 ha) based on SK Menteri Kehutanan No.823/Kpts-II/92 on 26 February 1992 (Anon 1997, Anon 1998).
Habitat and land use
Alas Purwo dominated by lowland rainforest and dense beach forest and has dense bamboo forest. The aluvial land in the western area planted with rice, watermelon and vegetables. This area has 25% of the mangrove forest in Java Island (Sedhana & Soedrajad 1995).
