Area: 48,678 ha
Site description (baseline)
A rugged area of the Zagros Mountains (c.1,500 m to 2,655 m) immediately north-east of the city of Shiraz. The massif has spectacular cliffs and crags and is surrounded by broad steppic outwash plains. The dominant vegetation throughout is Artemisia steppe.
Key biodiversity
See box for key species. The breeding avifauna is typical of the rather barren steppic mountain ranges of the southern Zagros. Other notable breeding species include Apus affinis, Melanocorypha bimaculata and Scotocerca inquieta. At least 54 species have been recorded in the reserve.
Non-bird biodiversity: Mammals: Panthera pardus (rare), Gazella subgutturosa (rare), Capra hircus aegagrus (rare) and Ovis ammon (rare).
