Plothen ponds

Site description
A large area of fish-ponds, established in the 11th-12th century, between the Rivers Saale and Weisse Elster. They have associated water-fringe vegetation, bogs and broadleaved deciduous forest.



Key biodiversity
This is an important site for breeding ducks, raptors and species associated with reedbeds.



Protected areas
National High International High39 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Drebaer Teiche NSG, 39 ha). 5 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Hädrichsteiche NSG, 5 ha). 1,896 ha of IBA covered by Landscape Protected Area (Plothener Teichgebiet, 1,896 ha). 590 ha of IBA covered by Landscape Protected Area (Thüringer Schiefergebirge und Frankenwald LSG, 44,000 ha). 2,350 ha of IBA covered by Nature Park (Thüringer Schiefergebirge/Obere Saale NP, 85,000 ha). IBA overlaps with Special Protection Area.
