Site description (baseline)
A bay on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea, comprising large shoals, intertidal zones and saltmarsh. An ice-free zone around a nuclear power-station outfall has increased the bay's importance for wintering waterbirds. The hinterland is used for pasture and haymaking; traditional fishing takes place at sea.

Key biodiversity
The site holds more than 20,000 passage waterbirds on a regular basis.
