Site description
The IBA covers the Odra river flood-plain between Mankovice and Ostrava. Habitats include Quercus and Ulmus riverine forest, alluvial meadows and oxbow lakes. Tributaries, drainage canals and millraces cut the landscape, and five fish-pond systems support reedbeds (Phragmites and Typha). Quercus/Carpinus or Tilia/Acer forest and arable land occur on the river terraces, with human settlements localized on the periphery. The fish-ponds are semi-intensively managed for fish-farming, and ducks are hunted during autumn.
Key biodiversity
The site holds 22,000-25,000 waterbirds on a regular basis during spring passage and the breeding season, and supports a large Larus ridibundus breeding colony. Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Crex crex (2-12 pairs).
