Giulie Pre-Alps

Site description
A pre-Alpine area in north-eastern Italy, with mountains and hills dominated by broadleaved woodland (beech Fagus) and scrub (Pinus mugo), with some alpine grasslands. The current area incorporates part of a site that was listed in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989), `Area between Gemona, Valle Resia, Monte Canin and Foresta del Tarvisio' (part of former site IT037).

Key biodiversity
The site is particularly important for Crex crex, which breeds in the grasslands, and for gamebirds.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are the abandonment of grassland management, which allows shrubs and trees to invade, and illegal hunting of gamebirds.

Protected areas
National Partial International None9,402 ha of IBA covered by Regional Nature Park (Prealpi Giulie, 9,402 ha).
